Facebook Reportedly Aiming to Lure Vevo from YouTube

Social media site Facebook is reportedly wooing music video-streaming giant Vevo – and hopes to take the two companies’ relationship up a gear.

Last autumn, the two integrated so that Facebook’s users could connect to the Vevo platform and view video clips directly using the Facebook timeline. Now Facebook aims to be exclusive host of Vevo’s services and content.

And there are reports that this arrangement would put the social media giant head to head with arch-rival Google’s YouTube. However, it should be stressed that things are still at a very early stage.

The adoption of Vevo, as a massive online platform, which said in December it projected over 3.7bn monthly global video views, would be a very big deal indeed for Facebook.

And the move has the potential to create some fierce competition in the web video world, while allowing Facebook users to listen to music while uploading images, making comments on walls and leaving messages for friends.

As one industry analyst said: “Only time will tell what your Facebook Timeline will look like in the future with these potential new video capabilities.”

• In a separate development, Facebook has announced that profiles on its site, are to go within weeks, and Facebook Timeline will be their replacement. This new interface, complete with a range of features, was released in September. And users have had the chance to switch over from December. Essentially, the new Timeline means a number of changes and fresh features. It neatly packages your life events in the form of photos, status updates and wall posts.
