The Rise of AI Traffic & AI Search Results: How to Track Website Traffic from AI Sources – Expert Blog
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly changing the way people search for information online. From platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini to AI-driven search results within Google itself, businesses are now seeing traffic from sources that didn’t exist a short time ago.
As an SEO and PPC Account Manager at Front Page Advantage, I’ve seen firsthand how these platforms are starting to influence website performance. Understanding and tracking this traffic is no longer optional — it’s essential if you want to stay ahead of your competitors.
In this article, I’ll explain what AI search platforms are, why they matter for SEO, and how you can track the traffic your website receives from them.
What Are AI Search Platforms?
AI-driven platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity use large language models to generate answers to user queries, often pulling in snippets, references, and links to external websites on Google. Unlike traditional search engines, where users click through results on a SERP (Search Engine Results Page), AI assistants deliver conversational answers — usually citing your website as a source.
Key Platforms in the AI Search Space:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI)
- Google Gemini
- Perplexity
- Others include Writesonic, Neeva, Microsoft’s Edge, etc.
At the same time, AI-powered search results within Google (Search Generative Experience, or SGE) are beginning to change how users interact with search. Instead of a list of links, users see AI-generated overviews with suggested follow-ups, which can either increase or reduce clicks to websites depending on the query.
Why AI Traffic Matters for SEO
For years, SEO strategies have revolved around ranking on page one of Google. But with AI platforms shaping user journeys, there is now more to consider.
Here is why recognising AI traffic is so important:

- Brand Visibility Beyond Google: If your content is being cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity, you’re gaining brand authority even if the click-through rate is lower.
- Shifts in User Behaviour: Users may trust conversational answers more than traditional results, which could reshape how leads discover your business.
- Competitive Advantage: Businesses that track and adapt to AI-driven traffic now will have an edge over those still focused purely on Google rankings.
How to Track AI Traffic in Google Analytics
Tracking AI-driven traffic in your analytics account is the first step. The good news is you can do this directly within Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
The easiest method is by creating an Exploration Report:
- Open GA4 and head to Explore → Blank exploration.
- Add Session source/medium as a dimension.
- Apply the following regex filter to capture AI traffic sources:

.*gpt.*|.*chatgpt.*|.*openai.*|.*neeva.*|.*writesonic.*|.*nimble.*|.*outrider.*|.*perplexity.*|.*google.*bard.*|.*bard.*google.*|.*bard.*|.*edgeservices.*|.*gemini.*google.*
This will capture sessions from AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.
Alternatively, you can create a custom report under the Library tab in GA4. Once added to your reporting menu, this will give you ongoing visibility of AI-driven traffic alongside your other acquisition reports. You can then copy this across different properties within a Google Analytics account if needed.
(See screenshot example for setup — filtering by session source/medium is the key step.)

How SEO Strategies Need to Adapt
Now that AI platforms are actively influencing traffic, SEO strategies should evolve to account for them:
- Focus on Authoritative Content: AI platforms tend to pull from sites with high authority and trustworthy information.
- Optimise for Citations: Structured, clear, well-referenced content increases your chances of being cited by AI platforms.
- Track and Monitor: Don’t just measure Google SERP performance — watch AI traffic trends over time to see how they shift.
- Experiment with Content Formats: FAQs, how-to guides, and data-driven content perform well in AI summaries.
Final Thoughts
AI isn’t replacing SEO or search — it’s adapting how we use it. Platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are already sending traffic to websites, and Google’s AI search results are set to become even more influential in the years to come.
